How to Create a Photography Portfolio Website (2022)

As a photographer, it's important to have a strong portfolio that showcases your best work. A strong portfolio could lead to more clients and help you build your brand online.

If you haven't created a portfolio yet, here are a couple of things to keep in mind when designing your portfolio.

1. Set specific goals for your website.

Ask yourself, what do you want to achieve by creating your own photography website?

Is your main focus to get more clients? Do you want to create a website to display your own personal photos and get discovered by other photographers? Having the answers to these questions prior to creating the website will allow you to choose your photos correctly.

2. Choose your pieces wisely.

Unlike an Instagram or Facebook page, we wouldn’t recommend publishing every single photo you have in hopes of increasing engagement.

Your professional photography website should be reserved for your best pieces that clearly align with your brand and the style that you want to be known for. Always remember, quality > quantity. We recommend 20 to 30 pictures per gallery--just to ensure that you’re not giving your viewers have too much content so that they come back for more.

3. Create a clean, digestible layout.

The layout of your website and photos are crucial. You’ll want to be strategic in where you place your photos--ensuring that your best photos are in the centre so that they can receive the most attention. Make sure to choose an appropriate colour scheme that goes with your photos as well.

If you have no coding or design background, we would suggest you use a no-code website builder in order to build your photography website.

Website builders such as Jemi and Squarespace allow for easy creation and have several templates from which you can choose from in order to make your ideal website. Many websites include specific photography templates which can make your job way easier, and you can customize them to your own liking.

Now that we've covered the basics of building a photography portfolio, you’re all ready to start creating!
